How do you know when things got started? How do you know when there's a problem?

  1. Holy shit. (I will lob the first curse word).. Everyone should listen to this podcast. My son is 40. His father made alcohol available to him at age 6. We were already divorced and I learned this years later. He’s a functioning alcoholic and marijuana user and manages to hold down a job and is the single dad of a transcendentallybeautiful 15 year old child. The mother is a worse alcohlic and has been isolated from contact through the choice of the child.. I’m very much involved in my grandchild’s life on an almost daily basis, but I hold my breath that this child won’t succumb to my son’s addictions which he manages to function well enough that he believes there’s not a problem. I now see how important your conversations are to me on a personal level even though my son is still alive. He minimizes the effects of alcohol and marijuana on his own life, and if these substances were not used daily and sometimes tip over into somewhat dangerous behavior I wouldn’t worry. But his child sees the daily use and I fear they may begin these behaviors with him at some point.
